Israeli-born, French-reared singer-songwriter Keren Ann has a gift for channeling mood into song. With a predilection for romantic tragedy, her intimate melodies overflow with a slow-burning melancholy and wistful heartache. Keren Ann is touring in support of her 6th solo album, 101, released this spring on EMI’s Blue Note Records.

Superstars in South Africa, Freshlyground consists of musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band weaves a musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy. They are touring in support of their latest album, Radio Africa. Boston’s own Zili Misik will open.

Born in Agadez, a dusty desert outpost on the great Saharan camel caravan, Omara “Bombino” Moctar is a young Tuareg guitarist and songwriter whose electrifying desert-blues jams and guitar riffs are reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and the late Ali Farka Toure.  Bombino is quickly gaining stature as one of Africa’s hottest guitarists on the heels of his newest release, Agadez.

This year’s Bastille Day celebration features two incredible francophone acts: Caravan Palace, with its irresistible gypsy jazz and electro-swing rhythms, and Yoro Ndiaye and his Afro-pop band, with their dazzling new take on Senegal's popular mbalax dance music. Back Bay's beautiful Marlborough Street will be blocked off to accommodate 2,000 revelers, celebrating freedom, community, cultural diversity and the friendship between nations. French food and drinks will also be available for sale from area restaurants, making this the only street party of its kind in Boston.

 

This is a rain or shine event.

From Mali

OUMOU SANGARE

One of Mali's most beloved singers, Oumou Sangare returns to Boston for the first time in over a decade. She has a gift for elevating traditional music to subtle, nuanced contemporary pop. She is recognized as the "songbird of Wassoulou," the region of southern Mali known for its bluesy rhythms and melodies. With a gloriously clear alto voice, Oumou Sangare is more than just a powerful, expressive singer. Her forceful polyrhythmic grooves and call-and-response songs pack a powerful message asking for change and speaking out against the struggles of women and children in Africa today.
